Reenacting as a 26th Cavalryman, Philippine Scouts
By Rudy Cabigas
Reenacting as 26th Cavalry (PS) Enlistedman
The standard enlistedman’s uniform was khaki shirt and breeches, boots and campaign hat. In cooler weather, the shirt was replaced with the wool O.D. shirt In the field the campaign hat was replaced by the steel helmet, which was a modification of the World War I helmet. He also wore an ammunition belt with suspenders, which held a first aid pouch, a pouch holding two pistol clips of .45 caliber ammunition and a pistol holster. A third clip was in his Model 1911 Automatic Pistol. Officers and men always secured their pistols to a lanyard draped around the neck. The rifle ammunition pouches held 8 round clips of .30 caliber for the M1 Garand Rifle. Ammunition was ball, except for one clip of armor piercing and one of tracer. Also hung on his left side was his gas mask.

Advanced Gear
The Scout's horse equipment consisted of the Model 1928 McClellan saddle converted from the Model 1904, with hooded stirrups. His bridle was the Model 1909, a double headstall with a snaffle and curb bit and two sets of reins. The halter worn beneath the bridle was the Model 1904. A lariat was snapped to the halter ring and passed around the animals neck and tied into a hangman's knot.
The pommel roll consisted of a nosebag, a grain bag with a feeding of oats and a raincoat. In the cantle roll was a woolen blanket and a mosquito bar both rolled in the shelter half along with the pole, pins and rope.
The canteen was strapped on top of the near side saddlebag. The rifle scabbard was also hung on the near side under the saddle skirt, butt up and forward.
